"The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled,
public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should
be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands
should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again
learn to work, instead of living on public assistance."
Cicero - 55 BC
Over 2000 years ago Cicero made the above observation about his government and country. Looking at human behavior, nothing has changed much. There are some things that we could add to his list of concerns, like bailouts, unwarranted wars, lobbiest (even though I suspect they were present then, as well).
The one interesting point that I want to dewell on is "the arrogance of officialdom". This behavior is exemplfied in such things as refusing to debate a challenger, having TV campaign ads that say the incumbent is working on an energy bill, has submitted an amendment to balance the federal budget, or stating I don't need to debate because I'm already amongst the people. None of these things accomplish anything, the incumbents just want you to think that they are doing something.
We have a choice: to plow new ground or let the weeds grow. Weeds extract nutrients from the soil, starving good plants. How much longer is it going to take for us as citizens to recognize that we must plow new ground, to save out government from being over-run by the weeds, which are taking us down the wrong road.
Please consider joining Virginia's Vote Out Incumbents Democracy all volunteer political action organization. Help spread the word and vote responsibly to stop this reckless way of running our government. We must wake others up to the responsibility of voting out ineffective and irresponsible incumbents.
