Shimla, November 3
The loss suffered by the BJP in the Himachal by-elections could force it to make drastic changes to its leadership and organizational set-up, in addition to reshuffling the Cabinet ahead of the 2022 assembly elections.
Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur could face the heat as the BJP lost ground in its Mandi territory, which was won by the party by a margin of nearly 4 lakhs of votes in the 2019 elections in Lok Sabha .
Furthermore, the dismal performance in the home state of the party’s national president, JP Nadda, may not be welcomed by the high command.
The fact that two of the CM’s ministerial colleagues, Education Minister Govind Thakur and Ram Lal Markanday, could not manage the advance of their Assembly segments from Manali and Lahaul and Spiti, respectively, also put a question mark on the performance of the BJP regime in the state.
The fact that he lost the seat of Mandi LS and three segments of the assembly – Arki, Fatehpur and Jubbal-Kotkhai – while in power clearly indicates that many anti-inaugurations are piling up against the government of the ‘State. “There was no problem against me or my government. I do not see any possibility of change. The sympathy factor for Congress and the ruling opposition to the government may have affected the prospects of the BJP, ”CM Thakur said.
The fact that Congress took the lead in nine of the 17 segments of the assembly that are part of Mandi Lok Sabha’s constituency indicates growing resentment against the BJP in the state. In the last parliamentary polls in 2019, Congress failed to secure the lead of even a single segment.
The victory of Congress came as a blow in the arm for the party. It was the first election that the party fought under its mainstay Virbhadra Singh. The vote of sympathy, especially in Mandi for his wife Pratibha Singh, worked for the party.
