Cherfilus-McCormick accuses Holness of running a smear campaign
PEMBROKE PARK, Florida. – Democratic U.S. Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick says her political opponent this election season, former Broward Commissioner Dale Holness, has gone too far.
Cherfilus-McCormick is the incumbent for Congressional District 20. She said she decided to take legal action against Holness because he engaged in a smear campaign.
“I was amazed that he went to such lengths to make up such lies,” said Cherfilus-McCormick, of Miramar.
Holness denied the accusation and asked, “Does anyone question anything she put on TV, radio or print against me?
Holness said it was he whose reputation was tainted, but he could provide no evidence. There is ample evidence to support what Cherfilus-McCormick alleges.
“We are running a campaign powered by grassroots supporters. We don’t need to embezzle $6 million in taxpayer dollars to buy a congressional seat. Our adversary may think she can do it,” Holness aide Justin Porter wrote in a text message.
This is the evidence that Cherfilus-McCormick included in his trial. Holness also said he has yet to receive a copy of the libel lawsuit that Cherfilus-McCormick said he filed.
“His name is not mentioned in the text… It’s pure opinion. Nothing says anyone did it or didn’t. It says maybe,” Holness said, adding: “There is no reference to her at all.
The primary election will take place on August 23.
