The AD-18 special election ends August 31!
Since Rob Bonta was appointed California’s new Attorney General, Voters in Assembly District 18 were fortunate enough to participate in a special election ending Aug. 31 to vote on who will replace him as the representative of most Oakland, San Leandro and Alameda. The winner of this special election will be elected to complete the term of our former Assembly member and will have the opportunity to stand for re-election next year in the standard 2022 electoral cycle.

After the July primary, two candidates qualified for the second round: Mia Bonta and Janani Ramachandran. Both candidates are expected to appear on the ballots that arrived in voters’ mailboxes this week and whoever achieves the majority of the votes will become our next Assembly member.
My office obtained the following tips from the Alameda Elections Department to help you better understand this election. Special elections like this tend to have a very low turnout, so encourage your networks to vote!
How to vote:
Registered voters should have received a ballot in the mail this week and are encouraged to complete and return it beforehand. No postage is required, just be sure to sign and date your envelope before sealing and sending.

The candidates :
Mia Bonta and Janani Ramachandran both finished in the top two in last month’s primary and will fight for the majority of votes in this August 31 second round. You can use Voter’s Edge nonprofit to find out more about each candidate.

You can find out more and hear the two candidates at the next forum of the League of Women’s Voters on Monday August 9 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.. The League of Women Voters often organizes impartial forums simply to provide the public with more information. I strongly encourage anyone who doesn’t know who to support to watch.

Upcoming recall election:
After the submission of an eligible number of signatures, the election to decide whether or not to remove Governor Gavin Newsom will end on September 14, 2021. Like the Assembly election, all registered voters will receive a ballot. by mail and may decide to return it, drop it off or vote in person. The ballot will consist of two questions: one asking if you are in favor of the recall and the other asking you to choose your preferred candidate IF the recall gets a majority of âyesâ votes.
My office will send a more detailed email as we get closer to this race, but you can read more details about it here.
Again: These elections are not facilitated by the city, so please do not hesitate to contact the Alameda Elections Department if you have any further questions.!
And let’s work together to ensure the participation of as many voters as possible by sharing this election information as much as possible!
