“Congress must apply KHAM theory to Gujarat again,” advises Shankersinh Vaghela
Shankersinh Vaghela, who is used to speaking out against BJP leaders in Gujarat, especially Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, and never hesitated to question Congress (while he was party leader), now says that with state elections slated for 2022, the Congress party must pull itself together.
“Leadership crisis in Gujarat”
Over the past few months, there has been a lot of talk about the change in leadership of the Gujarat Pradesh Congressional Committee (GPCC) – Amit Chavda, the current chairman of the GPCC, and Paresh Dhanani, the current head of the opposition, tendered their resignation. but the Delhi leadership is considering the names of the new leaders to replace them as it will be election year. “There has to be a face of a leader that people can trust. The party does not operate in a vacuum, it operates with the general public. The BJP also does not have a leader in the state. Party leaders, both busy snooping around Delhi. There is no one in Gujarat. Congress, while deciding on leaders, must keep in mind that there are also upcoming elections. I think UP and Gujarat elections will be held simultaneously since BJP is losing in UP, Goa etc. all over. There is a huge wave of anti-nomination, ”said Vaghela.
Need to apply ‘KHAM’
During the Patidar unrest in 2015 that gripped the state of Gujarat, several community leaders claimed that they were also not historically satisfied with the Congress Party because of the legacy and the KHAM theory which was started by Madhavsinh Solanki from the Patidar community. KHAM, which stands for Kshatriya, Harijan, Adivasi and Muslims, was also an important point in the 2017 elections as it was the first election after the massive unrest in Patidar.
“Congress needs to focus on the KHAM theory. They must take with them all the “poor”, the backward communities with them, because who will speak for them? They have no one to listen to their problems. I said the same to Bharatsinh Solanki when we met, ”Vaghela said, referring to the secret meetings between Solanki and Vaghela over the past few weeks. Asked about concerns about these statements which do not appeal to the Patidar community, he said: “The Patidar community has been with the congress with ‘tan, man and dhan’ (with body, mind and money). They know Congress is the only party that will work for them. We saw it in the last elections in 2017, ”he said.
Shankersinh Vaghela on his Congress membership
While during the interview, Vaghela did not once speak of Congress in his usual aggressive and condemnatory style, he admitted that he had spoken out against the party earlier. “It’s a really democratic party and people can express themselves. It’s not as restrictive as the BJP. The ideology of the party is such that the leaders have the right to speak. It is a party of Gandhi and Nehru, not like the BJP which controls everything a leader is allowed to say! Vaghela defended. “The leadership may have failed earlier, even I may have done some things wrong, but now is the time for Congress to pull itself together so that something can be done to defeat BJP and that strong opposition can also form. for the 2024 election. I don’t want a ticket or a leadership position if I go to Congress. I just want a strong opposition that can fight the BJP, ”Vaghela added.
On the “third front”: “I do not take the PAA seriously”
While Bapu himself has spoken of the need for a third front in Gujarat, he now says there is no place for it in the state. “There is no third front. It is a natural birth of a political party if the party in power does nothing, if there is massive opposition to power and if the opposition is weak, ”he said. The Aam Admi Party (AAP) had announced that it would run for the 182 seats in the state assembly for which Arvind Kejriwal himself had come to the state. When asked this, Vaghela laughs, “I don’t take AAP seriously, neither do you. They are the B team of the BJP. And bureaucrats don’t make good politicians. Manmohan Singh couldn’t and neither could Arvind Kejriwal. They (AAP in Gujarat) are hopeless.
