The municipal elections of November 2 are approaching and the year promises to be busy.
Atlanta will have all seats on the ballot, including the city council and the school board. Decatur, Avondale Estates, Stone Mountain, Clarkston and Tucker will also have their municipal elections this year.
There will be dozens of local election candidates, and these positions are among the most important public service jobs in the United States. It is democracy where the rubber meets the road. These are the people you are just as likely to see at the supermarket as you are at a city council meeting. They have the ability to make decisions that will affect you on a daily basis: how much you pay in property taxes, how often someone picks up your trash, whether you will be forced to wear masks in public spaces, among other things. These races require your participation and your attention. Otherwise, you will have the government you deserve.
We are faced with a daunting task familiar to all small local publishers: How can we cover all of these races in a way that is useful to our thousands of readers? How to ensure that information remains free for all and not hidden behind a paying wall? This is where you come in.
If you haven’t already, please stop what you’re doing and visit supportmylocalnews.com to become a paid supporter of Decaturish. You can sign up for as little as $ 3 per month. As a supporter, you will have access to our electronic editions, which generally have exclusive content for our paying supporters, as well as access to exclusive offers for paying supporters. But the most important thing you will receive is the continuous quality local news coverage you expect from Decaturish and our new website, the Tucker Observer.
The support of our community has made a difference in the way we operate. This allowed us to hire our first full-time reporter, Zoe Seiler, and support the work of our freelancers. This helps us cover the monthly running costs of our operations, which average approximately $ 4,000 to $ 6,000 per month. Our election coverage will increase our content production costs and because we are small and local news won’t always produce mind-blowing profits, it probably won’t generate a reciprocal increase in our revenue. To cover things effectively, we need your help. It’s that simple.
Since the summer of 2020, we have had around 1,500 supporters. Before that we had around 700. Doubling our number of supporters is fantastic. More support means more coverage of the things you care about. We’re not just trying to hang on to what we have. We are constantly thinking about the future and as a caring reader of local news you are an important part of that future.
In the days and weeks to come, you will hear more from me about the importance of your support. We will have a story with interviews from some of our supporters and demonstrating the impact we have had in our community. If your support has expired or you canceled, you will hear from me personally. We want you to come back and need your help. If there is something we are not doing, let us know by emailing us at [email protected]
