Live updates from Tripura civic body elections: vote count begins

Live election updates: Strong security is in place for the counting of votes for more than 200 seats. (To file)

The counting of votes for more than 200 seats in the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) and other civic bodies in Tripura began this morning amid heightened security. In addition to the planned security deployment, the Tripura State Rifles and the Central Armed Police Force have been deployed to maintain law and order in areas adjacent to the counting centers, officials said.

The counting of votes in the 2021 general municipal and Nagar Panchayat elections for 6 Nagar Panchayats, seven municipal councils and the Agartala Municipal Company will be carried out at 13 counting centers statewide. In total, there are 334 seats in urban local bodies, including Agartala Municipal Corporation (51 wards), 13 city councils and six Nagar panchayats in the state.

The ruling BJP has fielded candidates for all seats in Tripura’s municipal elections and has already won 112 of the undisputed 334 seats of the Municipal Corporation of Agartala and 19 city bodies.

Civic elections in Tripura: the BJP in the lead with 4 seats

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading the seats in Ambassa, Jirania, Teliamura and Sabroom, the Tripura State Election Commission informed.

The election took place on November 25 amid election-related violence, court cases, arrests and allegations.

Reinforced security in place at Tripura
In addition to normal security arrangements, the Tripura State Rifles and the Central Armed Police Force have also been deployed to maintain law and order in areas adjacent to counting centers, said Deputy Inspector General of Police Subrata Chakrabarty.

Three-tiered security is in place for the vote count for more than 200 seats at Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) and other civic bodies in Tripura, where it took place on Thursday amid court cases, arrests and allegations of attacks by political parties.
Municipal polls Tripura: the parties in struggle

The ruling BJP has fielded candidates for all seats in Tripura’s municipal elections and has already won 112 of the undisputed 334 seats of the Municipal Corporation of Agartala and 19 city bodies.

In the remaining 222 seats, up to 785 candidates are in the running after 36 candidates withdrew their nominations.

The elections were mainly held between the three parties – the BJP, the TMC and the CPI (M).

Civic polls in Tripura: 81.54% participation recorded
In total, 81.54% of over 4.93 lakh voters exercised their right to vote for the 14 civic body elections in Tripura on Thursday amid allegations of political violence by opposition camps . State Election Commission (SEC) officials, however, said no issues related to clashes or voting machines were reported in areas linked to the poll.
