GREENVILLE, NC – McCrae Dowless, the man at the center of the District 9 elections, agreed to a plea deal in Greenville federal court on Monday.
Dowless pleaded guilty to one count of theft of public property and one count of social security fraud.
According to court documents, Dowless worked for at least two candidates and their campaigns in the 2018 midterm election. During this time, he was reportedly paid thousands of dollars for his work, but did not report his income. at the Social Security Administration.
He also faced a second count of Social Security fraud and one count of misrepresenting, but those charges were dismissed.
Last year, he was indicted on several counts in connection with the District 9 electoral fraud investigation, including obstruction of justice, perjury and possession of postal ballots.
He was arrested less than a week after the state’s board of elections ruled that his work on Harris’ behalf, starting with the 2018 primaries, marred the GOP candidate’s apparent victory in November.
A new election has been ordered.
Channel 9’s in-depth investigation of the district has led to the only time in documented history that a federal election has been called off for an investigation into fraud.
Dowless is expected to be sentenced on federal charges in September.
