Marcelo: Real Madrid defender may travel to Chelsea after his release from electoral duties
What happened on Tuesday?
The Brazilian arrived at the polling station to monitor the Madrid assembly elections on Tuesday morning.
According to the Spanish media La Sexta, Marcelo was the “first substitute member” appointed to fill this role. However, an elderly lady, who was the ‘second replacement’, volunteered to do the job and allow Marcelo to return and be able to travel with the Real side.
Marcelo then reportedly left the polling station, which was at a school called ‘Liceo Europeo de La Moraleja’ on the outskirts of Alcobendas – about a 15-minute drive from Madrid’s training ground and the airport. .
Marcelo reportedly left the polling station at 8:30 am CET, with the flight from Madrid at 10:30 am CET.
What was the problem?
Marcelo was selected to be part of a polling station for the elections. While they take place before the game, Real had to fly away on Tuesday due to UEFA regulations.
COVID-19 is also making it more difficult because taking Marcelo out would break the Real Madrid bubble.
But that will no longer be a problem as the Brazilian can join the rest of the squad and fly away on Tuesday morning.
Is there a precedent for this?
Yes. In 2019, Levante goalkeeper Aitor Fernandez was released from his post at a polling station as the electoral commission accepted a second appeal.
He played against Athletic Bilbao on the same day.
Professionals who have to participate in public events organized on polling day, which had been scheduled before the poll, can appeal.
But Marcelo was released after another worker was replaced in his place, which allowed him to leave.
Marcelo took Spanish nationality in 2011 to avoid being a non-EU player, which is why he was asked in the first place.
Will he play on Wednesday?
Not necessarily. Marcelo played in the first leg and fought against Christian Pulisic and N’Golo Kante.
Los Blancos may also welcome Mendy back for the game at Stamford Bridge, who is expected to return to the starting lineup.
It’s a big blow for Marcelo, who has struggled to make it into Zinedine Zidane’s first team this season. However, he will benefit from his membership in the team.
What is the actual full team for the tie?
- Militao, Ramos, Nacho, Marcelo, Odriozola, Mendy, Miguel
- Kroos, Modric, Casemiro, Valverde, Isco, Arribas, Blanco
- Hazard, Benzema, Asensio, Vinicius Jr., Mariano, Rodrygo
Is there anything else i need to know?
Yes. The Athletic took a look at Mendy, who is set to play Wednesday night instead of Marcelo.
