Sci-fi ‘Cringe’ recall ad featuring ‘Gaybraham Lincoln’ is toast

A bizarre nearly 3-minute ad campaign in support of the San Francisco school board recall is pilloried on Twitter.

The announcement was posted on Twitter Tuesday by Recall SF School Board, the organization leading the charge against President Gabriela Lopez, who has battled former Vice President Alison Collins and current Vice President Faauuga Moliga.

It features campaign leaders Autumn Looijen and Siva Raj, with a man identified as “Gaybraham Lincoln”.

During the span of the largely unreleased three-minute commercial recorded inside “Campaign HQ,” “Gaybraham Lincoln” speaks with a British accent as Looijen and Raj celebrate the Mayor’s recall approvals of San Francisco London Breed and State Senator Scott Wiener. Raj also condemns a local Democratic organization for being “anti-Asian” in the closing seconds of the video.

“We are letting political clubs know that they will be seen as anti-parent, anti-Asian if they support these commissioners,” the school board’s reminder account wrote on Twitter.

The ad was quickly roasted for its low-budget, cringe-worthy aesthetic, but also for Lincoln’s odd affectation and dress, which some have called homophobic. Recall supporters in the responses largely ignored the “Gaybraham” cameo.

(It is not known if Gaybraham Lincoln is referring to a “30 Rock” gag, perhaps the most visible allusion in pop culture to such a character, although historians have argued for decades that the 16th US President was, indeed, gay.)

In an email to SFGATE, Raj defended the video, writing that the person who played Lincoln is David Thompson, a “gay parent rightly upset that the school board favored the name change over reopening and found a symbolic means of communicating disapproval “. Raj also said he was bisexual.

“This is possibly the scariest thing we’ve ever seen,” a poster said on Twitter. Another wrote: “You’re going to turn off voters who might otherwise join you. “

Among the critics was District 5 Supervisor Dean Preston.

“I don’t often share offensive propaganda from campaigns that I don’t agree with, but this one is worth sharing because it does more harm than good to their cause,” Preston said on Twitter Wednesday. in response to video. “I don’t see how anyone can watch this video and trust this VC-funded campaign on educators in our city.”

The recall election is scheduled for February 15.
