West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has reinstated her 34-year-old nephew as second-in-command of her ruling party, expressing full confidence in her heir apparent.
Abhishek Banerjee, a Member of Parliament, was appointed General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress in June last year, nearly a month after the party returned to power in Assembly elections in the state.
However, last week Mamata dissolved all positions in her party except that of her – the chairwoman – to end the growing rift between Trinamool’s old guard and its Young Turks over pressure of Abhishek for a “one man, one”. post politics in the party.
The proposed policy was fiercely opposed by some senior Trinamool officials holding multiple portfolios in the policy team and its government. Instead, she had formed a 20-member national working committee to lead the party.
“The decision to reinstate Abhishek as party general secretary was taken at a committee meeting, chaired by Mamata, on Friday evening,” a Trinamool Congress leader told UNB.
On May 2 last year, Mamata made history when he single-handedly won a landslide victory in state elections for the third consecutive time, standing up against anti-incumbency and fending off a massive challenge of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling BJP.
Bengal witnessed the most publicized polls last year. While Mamata had insisted on being the daughter of Bengal, the BJP went too far in asking people to vote for ‘change and development’ after 50 years of Communist and Congress rule in Trinamool.
